Over the summer I read a great book titled “Searching for God Knows What” by Donald Miller and have been wanting to post a review of the book for some time now.

Donald Miller is a very interesting Christian author. He writes in a very candid manner and provides insights into Christianity that really make you think. I have a hard time putting his books down when I read them (two years ago I read “Blue Like Jazz” – another great book of his).

Here is a quick review of the book I found on his website:

Can the gospel of Jesus be summed up in bullet points and formulas? Has a quick-fix culture altered the gospel of Christ, stripped it of its beauty and meaning? If you’re tired of the refined version of the gospel of Jesus and are ready to understand the gospel of Christ in full, you are ready for Searching for God Knows What. In this book, critically acclaimed author Donald Miller explains the gospel of Jesus as you have never heard it before, and perhaps as it has not been explained in over 400 years. Rather than reducing the gospel of Jesus into a few ideas for easy consumption, Donald Miller demonstrates how the gospel of Jesus explains all of life, everything from Junior High politics to Basketball. This book is bound to entertain and stimulate as you laugh, cry and even find yourself in the human story. Donald weaves through stories of bearded women, three-legged men and even aliens to bring to light important and beautiful ideas about the origins of the human personality. As always, Donald Miller is bound to offend, but by the end of this book, you will never think of the gospel of Jesus the same.

Note: You can read this review and a sample of the entire first chapter here.

I don’t agree with everything Donald Miller writes but some of the things he’s written has changed the way I think about the gospel of Jesus (just like the review said). For example, what he wrote in chapter 5, Naked, changed and/or deepened my thoughts about God and Adam and Eve. He uses the first couple chapters of Genesis as his basis for the chapter and expands on many thoughts such as how long it took Adam to name all the animals (who would have thought over 100 years?) and why the feeling of loneliness comes from God. He also describes our relationship with God and why we are “wired” the way we are.

I could go on and on but I won’t. I also realize I am being vague but I fear going into greater detail would #1 – take too much time and #2 – ruin the book.

Please consider reading this book (or “Blue Like Jazz”) if you want a different yet stimulating take on Christianity.
